In this final sermon in the fall series on gifts, Melissa preached from Matthew 3:13-17 and Acts 2:1-13.
The holy spirit is somehow both a gift and a giver of gifts. One of the awkward parts about Jesus’ baptism is that Jesus does not need to be baptized. Jesus does not need to receive the Holy Spirit. Jesus receives the gift he doesn’t need and John gives a gift that he doesn’t have.
Receiving what you already have is not the same as receiving what you have. Receiving what you have can inspire gratitude, but receiving something you already have inspires graciousness.
~Eugene Rogers
Just because you received a song, doesn’t mean you can’t receive more of them. Once you’ve swam in one river, there are more rivers to swim. There is an abundance of gifts and receiving them moves us outward.
