I Corinthians 9:16-23
Paul descended into the laboring class rather than being paid for his ministry. That way he was able to be free from the patronage of the wealthy people of Corinth and others. There was something more significant in his life. He had been found by Jesus and this good news.
The spirit of the Lord is upon me. He has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release of the captives, recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.
Paul’s letter to the people of Corinth is to a people who were still learning how to be free from the things that enslaved them. They were still figuring that out. We are still figuring that out. And that is our life’s work.
