2024 Congregational Prayer

May 23, 2024

In April members of Raleigh Mennonite contributed to a congregational prayer. The prayer, compiled from the church’s submitted words and images, was read on Sunday, May 19, when we celebrated Pentecost and the renewal of our covenant to one another. The prayer was also posted on the RMC Instagram feed.

God of compassion,
we build this nest twig by twig
as we wash each other’s feet,
share bread and cup,
lift our cries of lament,
and sing songs of praise.
Feather by feather,
string by string,
we knit together the shelter of community.
Thank you for this place to laugh and grow.
Help us to welcome you with our whole hearts,
to love our neighbors as ourselves,
to share the load of the burdened.
Send your Holy Spirit to watch us.
We turn to you and one another,
offering what we have:
a room with a light,
a hatch of children,
and courage to tell the truth.
When danger is near,
we turn to you,
your healed wing our refuge.
Make us brave and kind
that we will come to trust your loving grace.
Abide with us fragile creatures
as we lift our voices in harmony,
praising you,
our brooding God.

She shared this Jan Richardson blessing with us:

This Day We Say Grateful
A Sending Blessing

It is a strange thing
to be so bound
and so released
all in the same moment,
to feel the heart
open wide
and wider still
even as it turns
to take its leave.

On this day,
let us say
this is simply the way
love moves
in its ceaseless spiraling,
turning us toward
one another,
then sending us
into what waits for us
with arms open wide to us
in welcome
and in hope.
